Abstract

Djibouti is located in an area of significant importance in the geopolitical and geoeconomic competition between China and the United States of America. This is apparent if we consider three things: Djibouti's location on the Bab el-Mandeb Straits, the fact that both China and United States have a military base on its territory, and thirdly the internal political stability that it has been displayed despite the turbulent environment. Keeping our gaze on one hand on the politics practiced by Djibouti and on the other on the sino-american rivalry, we will try to answer three questions. The african state is a hub of economic, political and military presence of world powers, but why do have great powers turned to this small state? How does it handle the presence of both China and the U.S.A.? And finally can the two of them co-exist militarily, politically and economically in a country and in a region? To answer these concerns we begin with an analysis of Djibouti's geostrategic importance to China and the United States of America. In the second part we deal with Djibouti's political planning and the influence exerted on it by the presence of both China and the U.S.A. Finally, in the third part we make a brief mention on the coexistence and cooperation of the two states and the future prospect. Through the present study we aim to provide the reading gap with an alternative perspective of sino-american relations, drawing the attention to the small african state of Djibouti, which however seems to be of high importance in the geopolitical and economic competition. In addition, the country's geostrategic importance is only a sample of its vision for the future as it wishes to develop beyond a military hub into an economic, sommercial and technological center. Ultimately, however, what how the chinese and american presence translate to Djibouti!
