This paper attempts to map the field of production of contemporary Installation Art. It focuses on the ways artistic creation is being developed and altered at each time is connected to the broader socioeconomical changes of the community it refers to, through a synthesis of both theoretical and empirical research. It begins with a brief overview of some of the theories defining today the components of Installation Art as an "eidos"; form, space, time and the subjects of creation, using in a critical way notions from the work -especially- of Nicolas Bourriaud and Deleuze and Guattari. The essays is completed by the description, analysis and interpretation of case studies, specifically installations that have been created during the time of the survey in Athens, in order to determine how the above mentioned components are differentiated in each case, thus creating the unique "identity " of the art projects. It seeks the nature and characteristics of the creative process, and -ultimately- the art product as a result of material and non-material factors, as a reflection of the work method of people shaping it and of the space in which it is identified. It approaches, finally, some of the museological aspects of installation art, especially the exhibition approach and curatorial logic imposed by the characteristics of these projects, recognizing the exhibition space as a configuration field of the relationship of the art public to the art works themselves, of the artist to society.
