Energy taxes have long been advocated as one of the most cost-effective instruments to mitigate global warming. In this paper, we develop an input- output model to examine the macroeconomic and sectoral effects of energy taxation in Greece. The design of the model is based exclusively on the structure of the environmental input-output tables of the Greek economy. The energy tax is set at the level of lOOOdrs/TJ and remains constant ever since. Two scenarios are examined: according to the first, the tax burdens equally all energy products, whereas in the second environmental-friendly energy products, such as natural gas and gas, are exempted. The results reveal increases in the value of most economic variables as well as the cost of production.
