Abstract

The population of a country is distinguished by the social scientists in labour force and non labour force. The labour force includes the employed as well as the unemployed. Those two categories and especially the unemployed are measured by using the definition proposed by the International Labour Organization. This definition is used by the Labour Force Surveys worldwide. The boundaries of these classifications raise questions and disagreements.The purpose of this dissertation is to show that the percent of unemployment announced by the official data sources is the result of using this common acceptable definition of unemployment. This is a political decision and not a statistical choice. Four hypothesis are been formulated as alternative definitions for the measure of unemployment by using primary data from the Greek Labour Force Survey of 2009 and the four new definitions are showing the changes basically in the unemployment rate. These changes presented in the dissertation are indicative and do not cover all possibilities.
