Υπόθεση Pacifico: London Times, Palmerston και Αντισημιτισμός

Abstract

Η Υπόθεση Pacifico αποτελεί ένα σημαντικό διπλωματικό επεισόδιο του 19ου αιώνα, που συνδέει τις αποικιακές φιλοδοξίες της Μεγάλης Βρετανίας με την κοινωνικοπολιτική πραγματικότητα της Ελλάδας και της Ευρώπης της εποχής. Η παρούσα μελέτη στοχεύει να αναδείξει τη σημασία της υπόθεσης μέσα από δύο κεντρικές αφηγήσεις: τη βρετανική και την εβραϊκή. Από τη βρετανική πλευρά, η υπόθεση αποτελεί παράδειγμα αποικιακής διπλωματίας, ενσαρκωμένη στη ρητορική «Civis Romanus Sum» του Palmerston, που επιδίωκε να δικαιολογήσει τη χρήση βίας για την προστασία των συμφερόντων και των υπηκόων της Βρετανίας στο εξωτερικό. Από την εβραϊκή πλευρά, η επίθεση κατά της οικίας του David Pacifico στην Αθήνα αναλύεται ως εκδήλωση «αντισημιτισμού» στην ελληνική κοινωνία και ευρύτερα ως αντανάκλαση των ευρωπαϊκών προκαταλήψεων. Η έρευνα βασίζεται στην εφημερίδα Times του Λονδίνου ως κύρια πηγή, αναδεικνύοντας την επιρροή της στη διαμόρφωση της κοινής γνώμης και την κριτική στάση της απέναντι στις πολιτικές του Palmerston. Παράλληλα, εντάσσει την υπόθεση Pacifico στο ευρύτερο πλαίσιο των ελληνοβρετανικών εντάσεων και των διεθνών γεωπολιτικών συγκρούσεων, εξετάζοντας και συναφή περιστατικά, όπως η υπόθεση Finlay και οι διαμάχες στα Ιόνια Νησιά. Μέσα από αυτές τις διαστάσεις, η μελέτη υπογραμμίζει την πολυδιάστατη φύση της υπόθεσης και τη σημασία της για τη διπλωματία, τον αποικιακό επεκτατισμό και τις διακρίσεις που υφίσταντο οι μειονότητες, συνεισφέροντας στην ιστοριογραφική ανάδειξη της Υπόθεσης Pacifico ως ορόσημο στις διεθνείς σχέσεις της Ευρώπης του 19ου αιώνα.

The Don Pacifico Affair stands as a pivotal diplomatic incident of the 19th century, intertwining the colonial ambitions of Great Britain with the socio-political realities of Greece and Europe of that era. This study aims to highlight the historical significance of the affair through two central perspectives: the British and the Jewish. From the British viewpoint, the affair serves as an exemplar of imperial diplomacy, encapsulated in Palmerston’s iconic “Civis Romanus Sum” rhetoric, which sought to justify Britain’s use of force to protect its interests and citizens abroad. From the Jewish perspective, the attack on Don Pacifico’s residence in Athens is examined as a manifestation of antisemitism within Greek society and a broader reflection of European prejudices. This research utilizes The Times of London as its primary source, analysing the newspaper's influence on public opinion and its critical stance against Palmerston’s policies. Furthermore, the study situates the Pacifico Affair within the wider context of Anglo-Greek tensions and international geopolitics, shedding light on related cases, such as the Finlay claims and the Ionian Islands disputes. By addressing these dimensions, the research underscores the multifaceted nature of the affair and its significance in the realms of diplomacy, colonialism, and minority rights. Ultimately, the study contributes to the historiographical recognition of the Pacifico Affair as a landmark event with enduring implications for 19th-century European international relations.
