Abstract

The primary goal of this work was the selection of a contemporary issue for the compilation of this dissertation. The theme invites rich discussion and drives motivation for in-depth analysis on a theoretical level, often referring to case-law as a guide; this theme is Money Laundering, a matter which concerns the entire legal community at present, and renders numerous interesting extensions.Above all, this paper attempts to portray a clear image of the criminal act- Money Laundering, while presenting phases and techniques of this act. Subsequently, Money Laundering is paralleled to organised crime, two phenomena which are directly connected.Following the aforementioned comparison, the international legislative and non-legislative articles that refer to Money Laundering are depicted, which in turn have led to the formation of Greek legislation for the prevention and suppression of Money Laundering. The analysis of the past, present and potential future regulation against the particular crime is not to be overlooked within this dissertation.Yet another significant factor is the comparison with foreign legislation, which indicates Greek progress in this field. Overall, the highest importance lies within the critical conclusion employed at the end of this work. It is in that critical conclusion where one can ascertain the progress made by the Greek legislator and also detect the lack of efficiency, as far as adequate confrontation of money laundering is concerned.In closing, the discussion revolves around one of the most crucial issues constituting contemporary criminal law-- the permutation of freedom and security and how they interact.
