Abstract:This study examines the attitudes of women gamers towards the representation of female gender in video games while taking into consideration additional factors such as their identification with the “gamer” identity, their attitude towards gaming itself and the elements of the postfeminst sensibility. The purpose is to examine and understand the different and multiple preferences, attitudes and pleasures of the women audience in a more holistic manner rather than embracing an essentialist conception of gender that leads to the perpetuation of generalizing women gamers’ preferences. The methodology deployed for carrying out the research was Q Methodology as it combines in a holistic and thoroughly hybrid manner elements of both quantitative and qualitative methods. Following the collection and analysis of the research data, four distinct groups of women gamers emerged, the attitudes of whom towards the female gender representations in video games are significantly shaped through their familiarization with the Medium, their identification with the “gamer” identity and their attitude towards the Medium itself as well as the articulation or not of the elements of the postfeminist sensibility from their part. Consequently it is vital that research on the field take into seriously consideration the ways to which the nature of the video games Medium and the subculture of gaming are constructed while the need to redefining the audience’s relationship with the Medium emerges.
