Abstract:Objective of this thesis is to investigate the ways followed by the Greek refugees of Pontos, the Black Sea region, in order to integrate into Greece; also to investigate the implications of these ways upon the conservation or differentiation of their cultural identity. The research hypotheses tested were: 1. The process of full integration of Pontic Greek refugees into the local society has only started with their 3rd generation. The lives of the 1st generation were consumed in a struggle for survival and those of the 2nd in an attempt to stabilize within the social environment. 2. Throughout this process, as all three generations of Pontic Greek refugees were striving to assimilate, their particular cultural identity remained distinct, maintaining the cultural continuity of the group. The thesis is divided into two parts. The first part examines the historical and social developments that resulted in the forced migration of the Pontic Greeks from Turkey to Greece and clarifies the meanings of the terms "integration" and "identity." The second part relates to the empirical research, through biographical method, among three generations of Pontic Greek refugees and in three types of villages: (i) exclusively inhabited by Pontic refugees; (ii) inhabited by Pontic and other Asia Minor refugees; and (iii) inhabited by refugees and local people. All three types of villages were in Eordaea, an area of high concentration of Pontic population, located in North Western Greece. Integration was tested against the choice of place of settlement, the relations with other ethnic groups, and the ways of access to employment, to housing, to education and to the state and political system. Identity was tested against the evolution of dialect, the awareness of common history, the lifestyle and the value system. The analysis of the narratives of the Pontic Greek refugees asserted the validity of the hypotheses: - Overall integration started with the third generation, as a result of the excess efforts of the two previous generations which experienced discrimination and exclusion. - The Pontic Greek cultural identity remains largely resistant and strong, sometimes in conflict and other times in line with the overall national identity.
