Abstract:The current study presents the effort for a complete presentation of the phenomenon of the legalisation of proceeds from criminal activities, widely known as “Money Laundering”. “Money Laundering” describes the process through which the illegal source of income is concealed in such a way that its origin seems legal. Through “Money Laundering” the illegal income penetrates the legal financial system and becomes part of it.Both the rapid growth of technology and the free flow of capital have made “Money Laundering” in the last decade easier. This situation has led to the intervention of the european and the international community and to the implementation of concrete Anti-Money Laundering policies and measures. The current study attempts a short description of the phenomenon itself, of the phases of its development, as well as of its various techniques. This study presents the international and european legislative framework against the “Money Laundering”. On a national level the study presents the law governing money laundering from 1990 onwards, while there is a detailed analysis of the current Greek law 3691/2008. Finally, the study attempts a critical approach of the current legal framework on the basis of its effectiveness in the prevention and repression of the phenomenon, and concludes that there is room for further improvement.
