Abstract:Nowdays, it is known that due to technology information is spread rapidlyaround the world. Undeniably, we live in a world which is bombarded by allsorts of information constantly. Thus, it is difficult to accept a unique definitionconcerning the word “information”, as each individual defines it according tohis/her scientific field he/she represents. The purpose of this project is to specifyas much as it is possible the meaning of the word “information” related to law.The project consists of three chapters, an introductory paragraph and theconclusive paragraph including the final results. The first chapter deals first of all with the term “information” and manydifferent definitions are laid out given by scientists who tried to define themeaning of the word in the past. Secondly, we have tried to distinguish theterms: “Data”, “Knowledge”, “Information”. Later on, we make a reference tothe mathematical theory of information whose “father” is Claude Shannon andto the meaning of information in science. The second chapter, focuses on what information means related toConstitution and generally to the laws. So, it is examined how information isrelated to society , personal matters, as well as computer science in general.Specifically, the chapter focuses on and analyses the European directive95/46/EK, which was validated in Greece with the Law 2472/1997, about thelawful protection of the elaboration of personal information. In this chapter, it isalso examined how this directive is applied in other European countries. In the third chapter, the meaning of “administrative” information ispointed out. This kind of information is usually found in administrative laws wherethe documents can be considered as means of information.7In conclusion, the word “information” as far as Law is concerned, can bedistinguished in four different kinds: Firstly, the kind of “general” informationwhich refers to the right of everyone in information. Secondly, the kind of“personal” information which refers to the personal data of everyone. Then, theinformation which is related to computer science and last but not least the“administrative” information which concerns the documents and the right ofcitizens to take information about them. All in all, taking into consideration thisproject, it can be understood that the word “information” cannot be defineduniquely.
