Abstract:The aim of this dissertation is to identify and study the ways through which the politically active LGBTQ subjects of Athens form new ways and spaces, where discourses and subjectivities are circulated and articulated. Through the relevant Greek and international research, as well as through semi-structured interviews with 8 members of the local LGBTQ community, this research studies the political tools of “identity” and “safety” and the ways these are utilized in nationally and culturally defined context. The primary material was studied using Discourse Analysis through a Foucauldian perspective, while the tool of reflexivity was used to detect the power dynamics generated by the researcher’s own experience within the field of study. The subjects focused on the difference between the terms LGBTQ movement, here defined as subjectivity crafted by the movement, and LGBTQ community, here defines as subjectivity crafted by the community, as well as the variety of individual narratives that emerge within the movement in relation to the tools of “identity” and “safety”. “Identity” as a tool is located in the center of the LGBTQ movement, since it is valued as a definite factor of the politics that any subject can exercise. Even though it is considered a tool for emancipation, the study observed that it is utilised as an essentialist regime, and as a result it can be (and probably is) used as another further tool of oppression for queer people who experience multiple systems of oppression due to their identities, to conform to the mainstream identity narratives that exist within the community. “Safety”, on the other hand, is witnessed as a (socially and historically varied) procedure of articulation of individualistic narratives of safety that are re-produced by the subjects in relation to their individual identity narratives. These observations highlight the difficulties subjects that are further from any kind of normative identities, due to the intersectionality of the oppressions they face, might experience within the LGBTQ movement. At the same time, the presence of the “Greek Gay” with the narrative of the community raises questions about the ways through which this subject claims a distinct position within the national narrative of modern Greece.
