Abstract:
It is true that nowadays the use of personal data is becoming more frequent in various spheres of economic and social activities. Indeed, the progress made in information technology significantly facilitates the processing and exchange of such data. However, the extensive application of computer technology and the internet in more and more human activities cannot leave anyone indifferent, since the daily consequences are severe for everyone. The collection and processing of personal data is one of the biggest dangers of intervention in the individual’s privacy. The financial sector is probably the source of most issues for the protection of personal data. Indeed, in Greece there are already companies that provide financial information to conduct business and individuals. An example is "Tiresias" which provides information mainly for financial institutions. More specifically, “Tiresias” is an inter banking company which processes data that reflect the economic behavior of individuals and companies as well as data that contribute to the prevention of fraud in financial transactions. The need to find the right solution between the right to privacy and other legitimate public and private interests of individual or collective impact - combined with the widespread and significant technological advances of our time, which enables the spreading, storing and processing of vast amounts of information in less time and at negligible cost - requires the assessment of the situation of large numbers of citizens that are in circumstances which may lead to conflicts in the course of trade, finance, business or private transactions.
