Abstract:The metropolis, the contemporary urban phenomenon which Louis Mumford characterized as the “anti-city”, seems to be ever-expanding and evolving, and also seems to be the definitive factor in understanding international urban, economical and political tendencies. The historical approach of the metropolis is essential in order to comprehend the causes of its birth, to compare it to the cities of the past and to speculate on its future. In this paper the first area we focus on is the exhibition of the critical points in the historical process that played a major role in the creation of the multi-cultural metropolis. These points are traced in the classical ancient period, in medieval Europe, in the colonization of the world, in the founding of capitalism, in the Industrial Revolution and in the modern era.Our second area of interest is the analytical description of the metropolis and of its key features, which finally leads us to the posing of questions regarding its nature:- How can we define the metropolis?- Is it one or many cities joined together?- What is its major contradiction?- What do its various citizens have in common?- And what mostly interests us in this paper: How can we describe its multi-cultural organization and what is the significance of the variety in ethnic, social and religious groups that live and interact in the metropolis?
