Abstract:Vienna is a city with especially persistent myths, one of them being the myth of the harmonious multicultural melting pot around 1900. Current political and discursive strategies of representing the image of Vienna are trying to portray the city as an emerging global and - again - a multicultural city. What these representations do not take into account are the heated debates around these issues in the cities where the “global” and “multicultural” labels were borrowed from (and where they might be justified).A particularly striking example of such a clash of official representation and actual conditions is the presence of the migrants from the countries of the former Yugoslavia in Vienna. More than 10 % of the population, they are the largest migrant segment, but prominently absent in the multicultural project(s) and virtually invisible in both political and media representation. While these migrants' own voices are seldom heard in mainstream Vienna, discourses on them have brought about a series of well-known stereotypes - both positive and negative. What they have in common is their being pacifying about the existing conflicts of interests and power. The proposed paper will present findings of an exploratory oral history study to be undertaken in early 2004, and contrast these with a short history of discursive misrepresentation, which is already finished. The goal of the paper is to create channels for migrant voices in arenas where they would otherwise go unnoticed. The topics of the presentation will include:• landmarks of migration (1960ies - 1990ies)• personal and collective periodizations• migrants in closed and open urban spaces (parks, clubs, bars)• old work migrants vs. new (elite) refugees• men and women and their uses of space/s• the impact of generation on the perception of city and culture/s• cultural practices (Music, Sport etc.): continuity and change
